Russell Boating Club

Since 1976 our annual Tall Ships’ Regatta has been held in early January. It is a great day out for the family, finishing off back at the clubhouse for the Prize giving and a Hangi with Music around the Marquee. Tall Ships, Classics, Junk Rig and All-Comers make up a large fleet which is always a spectacular sight.

Russell Boating Club 49th Tall Ships Regatta

11th January, 2025

Provisional Results are now available

Congratulations to all those who participated in this year’s regatta and a massive thank-you to the army of volunteers who assisted with the running of this event. Without their help, this event could never happen! A special thanks also to the Hangi team who once again fed the substantial gathering.

Selecting a course for this year’s regatta proved to be a challenging task. Would the south-westerly wind prevail, or would a sea breeze kick in around midday, as it frequently does here in the Bay? Ultimately, the south-westerly maintained its dominance until late in the afternoon, when the sea breeze eventually gained control. At between 10 and 15 kts, the south westerly gave us some great racing conditions. A downwind start necessitated careful timing for less manoeuvrable yachts on the line and the windward legs also presented difficulties due to the frequent wind shifts.

The provisional regatta results are now available. Click the “Regatta Results” on this page to view.

Congratulations to all those who participated in this year’s regatta and a massive thank-you to the supporters and dozens of volunteers who greatly assisted with the running of this event. Without the generous supporters and the volunteer army this event could never happen!

This year’s race was sailed in ideal conditions with a 15-20kt North Westerly giving a windward leg to the first mark and then a fast run/reach home via two wing marks.

The final results for the regatta have now been released. The race committee is hopeful that at least two of the boats that recorded a DNF will eventually receive a race placing. Unfortunately, the committee boat was unable to identify their sail/banner number as they crossed the finish line and therefore will attempt to use other means to determine their finishing times.

2022 Tall Ships Regatta Report

It is with a very heavy heart that the RBC Committee have decided to cancel the Tall Ships January 2022 event, because of the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 restrictions. Everyone was in agreement that it would not do the event any justice by changing or down-grading from how it is usually run. We sincerely hope we can get this back up and running the following year with the ongoing amazing support and assistance from the town of Russell.

2021 Race Report

It was a beautiful day for the 46th running of Tall Ships on January 11th, 2021. A calm misty morning gave way to a cloudy day with light northerlies in the afternoon. Turnout was a little down on the previous record year, but hardly surprising after the year of such turmoil, we’ve all endured since then. The event ran smoothly from the briefing in the morning, to the sailing itself, the prize-giving, the hangi and all the way through to the party in the marquee still raging in the small hours. As usual this day was all about challenging ourselves on the water and having fun on sea and land.

A huge thanks must go out to all our volunteers. It’s only by their efforts year after year that this event happens at all and this time they were all superb as usual.
Also we thank our spot prize sponsors, Burnsco and BOI Marina Haul-out, for the prizes they provided.

All Comers:

We don’t provide handicap results for the All-Comers since their event was invented as a way for all kinds of other boats to support and spectate the Tall ships and Classics. However, we can’t help mentioning that first across the line was the magnificent local catamaran Apache. Apache had a good tussle with second-placed Arethusa, an equally impressive “Gunboat 60” racing catamaran, reputed to be one of the fastest of its class in the world. These two made a great spectacle as they bore down to the finish line, close together all the way.
